I read Carl Hiassen long before I was recruited to Florida (that’s my excuse for being here). It’s been over twenty years but I began to ‘get it’ pretty quickly. Nothing will stop a developer who has become enamored of a given property. Much like a man whose groin has commandeered his brain, he is merciless in pursuit (think Gaza…and Albania). With each new xxx-story building comes xxx cars, etc. etc. The developers live elsewhere.
Yes, I too have read CH for decades and still try to keep up with his current escapades. I was an environmental activist at age 11, in 1968, with four years on the estuary by then.
It was like a reverse Flipper - on a toxic river - broken motors - dead animals, dysfunctional parents, etc.
